Many web hosts have an option such as Fantastico, that will auto install Joomla for you, but you might not have that option or you might just want full control and be able to manually install Joomla and create the database yourself.

Creating a MySQL database

For this tutorial, we are creating the database in cPanel. Your host might not use cPanel, but the process should be similar.

db

First, you have to log into cPanel or whatever hosting control panel you are using and look for the area named “Databases” and click on the icon that says “MySQL Databases”.

  • Name the Database - At the top, give the database a name and click “create database”.
  • Create a User – In the middle of the page, where it says “Create User”, give the user a name and a password and click create.
  • Link the User to the Database – Go down to the bottom of the page where it says, “add user to database” and click the drop down to find the user and then the database that you just created. Now click add. Select “All Privileges”.

Now that your database is all set up, we can install Joomla.

Download Joomla

Navigate to Joomla.org and download Joomla 1.5.14 or the latest stable package. It will be in ZIP form.
Extract the ZIP somewhere temporary on your computer.

Upload Joomla

Open your FTP client. If you don’t have one, I recommend downloading Filezilla. Its free and it is a great program. Log into the FTP account on your host that gives access to the directory where you want your Joomla installation. This will take a little bit. It takes me about 20 minutes.

Install Joomla

Open your browser and navigate to www.yoursite.com. This should be the directory where you uploaded Joomla.

There are a few steps you need to complete.

JoomlaWebInstaller

1. Choose Language

2. There will be a system check. All of the above area should show all green yes

3. Agree to the license

4. Now you need to enter the database info that we just created in cpanel.

• Use “localhost” for host name
• Your database name
• Your user
• Your password

5. It will ask for some FTP info. I always choose no to enable Joomla FTP because I use Filezilla for all FTP.

6. Now enter your site name, email and login password.

7. Install Sample Data (Installing sample data is optional but I would recommend if this is your first time using Joomla. It is just some sample articles, sections and modules so you can see how things are set up.)

Click next.

Now you have to go back to your FTP in the directory where you installed Joomla and delete the installation directory.

After you delete the directory, you can goto your site with www.yoursite.com and goto your admin panel by going to www.yoursite.com/administrator.
